Introduction

We acknowledge that during the transition between childhood and adulthood, our taiohi's brains undergo rapid development. Studies have shown that when wellbeing is supported/mentored during this time, the transition to adulthood is easier for all involved.

We also acknowledge the Te Tiriti o Waitangi, which gives Māori, as Tangata Whenua, the right to equitable access to appropriate health care. As workers, we are committed to providing culturally appropriate and competent care that includes access pathways to Kaupapa Māori services.

Culturally competent care improves outcomes for Māori taiohi and their whānau. Cultural competence includes cultural awareness, sensitivity, knowledge, and the ability to apply cross-cultural skills in a clinical setting. We encourage you to seek guidance and supervision from cultural health specialists when unsure or unfamiliar with working with cultures other than your own.

• The factors that contribute to youth wellbeing.
• The legal frameworks that inform our work with taiohi.
• Components of and tools that can be used for screening, assessment and treatment of taiohi for substance use and mental health problems.
• How to manage withdrawals and intoxication.
• What it means to have ‘Integrated Care’ in the treatment of substance use and mental health problems for taiohi.
